Walking through the doors of a martial arts academy for the first time can feel intimidating. It’s completely normal to have questions running through your mind.

“What if I’m not fit enough?”

“What if everyone else is experienced?”

“Will I have to spar on my first lesson?”

If you’ve been thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) but haven’t quite taken that first step, you’re not alone. Almost every member at GB Gloucester had those same thoughts before their first class.

The good news? Your trial session is designed specifically for complete beginners.

You’re Not Expected to Know Anything

One of the biggest misconceptions about starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that you need to be fit, flexible or have previous martial arts experience.

You don’t.

Our beginner-friendly classes are built for people starting from scratch. Your coach will guide you through everything at a comfortable pace, explaining techniques clearly and making sure you never feel overwhelmed.

Every black belt in the academy was once exactly where you are now—walking into their very first class.

You’ll Receive a Warm Welcome

From the moment you arrive at GB Gloucester, you’ll be greeted by one of our coaches or team members.

We’ll show you around the academy, introduce you to a few members and answer any questions you may have before the class starts.

Our aim is simple: to make you feel comfortable from the moment you walk through the door.

Many new students tell us afterwards that the atmosphere was much friendlier and more relaxed than they expected.

No Pressure. No Ego.

One thing that surprises many beginners is how supportive the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community really is.

Unlike the stereotypes often associated with combat sports, you’ll find people from all walks of life training together.

Teachers, nurses, parents, students, office workers, police officers and retirees all share the same mat.

Everyone remembers what it felt like to be new, so experienced members are always happy to help beginners learn.

What Happens During Your Trial Class?

Every beginner session follows a structured format that helps you learn safely and confidently.

A Simple Warm-Up

The class begins with a gentle warm-up designed to prepare your body for training.

Don’t worry—this isn’t a military fitness session.

You’ll work at your own pace, and our coaches will always encourage you to take breaks if you need them.

Learning Techniques

Next, your coach will demonstrate a technique step by step.

You’ll then practise it with a partner while the coach walks around offering guidance and encouragement.

There’s no expectation to remember everything immediately.

The goal is simply to learn something new and enjoy the process.

Controlled Practice

Depending on the class, you may take part in some light positional drills.

If it’s your very first session, you’re never expected to jump straight into full sparring.

Our coaches will always explain your options and make sure you feel comfortable with whatever you’re doing.

What Should You Wear?

For your trial class, simply wear:

  • A t-shirt
  • Shorts or jogging bottoms without zips
  • A bottle of water
  • Flip-flops or sliders for walking around the academy

If you decide to continue training, we’ll explain everything you need afterwards.

Do I Need to Be Fit?

This is probably the question we hear most often.

The answer is no.

You don’t get fit before starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

You get fit because you start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Every class helps improve your:

  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Mobility
  • Balance
  • Coordination

You train at your own pace, and your fitness naturally improves over time.

What If I’m Nervous?

Feeling nervous is completely normal.

In fact, we’d be surprised if you weren’t.

Trying anything new takes courage, especially something you’ve never experienced before.

Most people discover that their nerves disappear within the first ten minutes of class.

Once you’re focused on learning and chatting with other members, you’ll quickly realise that everyone wants you to succeed.

You’re Never Competing Against Anyone Else

One of the best things about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that your only competition is yourself.

Nobody expects perfection.

Nobody expects you to be fast.

Nobody expects you to know every technique.

Every class is simply about becoming a little better than you were yesterday.

Why So Many Adults Choose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

People often join because they want to:

  • Improve their fitness
  • Learn practical self-defence
  • Reduce stress
  • Build confidence
  • Meet positive, like-minded people
  • Challenge themselves in a supportive environment

Many stay because they discover something even more valuable—a welcoming community that helps them grow both on and off the mats.

Your First Step Could Change More Than You Think

Everyone who now trains confidently at GB Gloucester once had a first lesson.

They wondered if they’d fit in.

They worried about being the least experienced person in the room.

They questioned whether they were “too old,” “too unfit,” or “not the type” for martial arts.

Today, they’re part of a team that supports each other, celebrates progress and enjoys learning together every week.

The hardest part isn’t your first class.

It’s deciding to book it.

If you’ve been thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we’d love to welcome you to GB Gloucester for a free trial session.

Come along, meet the team, experience the academy for yourself and discover why so many people wish they’d started sooner.

We can’t wait to meet you on the mats.
