How Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Supports Physical and Mental Wellbeing
Unlike many forms of exercise that become repetitive, every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class challenges both your body and your mind. In simple terms you get one hell of a workout whilst you are totally mentally engaged in whats going on.I call it sweating whilst thinking.
In my time here at Gracie Barra Gloucester I have become aware of several prestige university PhD research projects attempting to delve in to the why of this. It’s been a well kept “open secret” to practitioners within the BJJ community, but now the academics are trying to unravel the science behind the huge volume of anecdotal evidence out there. As I have been involved in coaching/teaching martial arts for over 40+ years now I have seen firsthand the good that training can do for people;
During a typical session, you’ll improve:
- Cardiovascular fitness
- Strength and mobility
- Balance and coordination
- Flexibility
- Endurance
At the same time, you’re constantly solving problems, adapting to new situations and making split-second decisions.
I think this blend of physical movement and mental focus is one reason why many students leave class feeling energised rather than drained, it’s like BJJ is physically exhausting and psychologically rewarding at the same time. Plus, the scientists will tell you that through BJJ training in particular, the combinations of endorphins, dopamine, seratonin and especially oxytocin (amongst others) that are released are why, post training, students feel calm, happy, confident and mentally reset.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a Powerful Stress Reliever
Modern life is busy. Work deadlines, family responsibilities and constant phone notifications make it difficult to truly switch off. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu demands your full attention when you are training, there’s no room to think about emails or tomorrow’s meeting—you have to stay present.
Many students describe BJJ as a form of active meditation. For an hour, your focus is entirely on movement, breathing and technique. This mental reset often carries over into everyday life to, helping people manage stress more effectively.
Building Confidence Through Progress on the Mats whilst teaching humility at the same time
Confidence isn’t something that appears overnight. I’m talking here about the type of confidence I call “self trust”, the type of confidence that is grounded in the reality of experience (not the type of confidence projected by the ego). Paradoxically, that very same experience of reality, teaches humility too!
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a particularly powerful teacher of humility because it removes many of the illusions people use to maintain a sense of superiority. That mat simply doesn’t care about your job title, academic qualifications, intelligence, bank balance, physical appearance, size, strength, athletisism or even how persuasive you are. If someone applies a technically sound choke or sweep the feedback is immediate. BJJ training consistently provides this brutally honest reminder to everyone, yet this lesson in humility does not diminish true “self trust” confidence, infact it creates a more accurate perspective of the true source of that confidence.
What I am saying is, BJJ builds confidence because it repeatedly exposes you to your limitations in training and at the same time provides you with the evidence/proof that you CAN struggle, can fail, can adapt and can improve. “Self trust” confidence doesn’t come from believing you are unbeatable, far from it! BJJ training has a habit of reminding everyone that there is always someone who can beat you, but, because of your ever expanding experience of being in, and dealing with difficult sitations, you become ever more confident in your ability to solve the problems in those situations. This I believe is the BJJ definition of the famous phrase “becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable” vis-a-vis immersion in the hardship of BJJ training, over time and through constant proof, builds your trust in your ability to problem solve in the heat of difficulty … and this is where your confidence stems from!
At the same time however, such feedback obliterates the projected false confidence projected by the ego. There are many anecdotes about “leaving your ego at the door” when it comes to BJJ training designed to address precisely this matter. Over the years I have witnessed many a projected ego quit the gym because someone smaller, lighter or younger has has subjected them to the experience of the reality of their situation and shattered their self image of how superior they thought they were!
IIn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it’s the hundreds of small wins that really grow your self-trust. Learning and executing your first escape. Successfully applying a technique you’ve been practising. Then doing it again and again under different conditions. Each success builds on the last, creating a compounding effect: every small milestone reinforces and builds your belief in you and the consistent effort leads to real progress, making you more confident to tackle the next challenge. Unlike many sports where success depends on natural athletic ability, BJJ rewards patience, persistence and resilience. This is what makes it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, including those looking for BJJ classes for beginners in a welcoming environment.
The Community Side of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
One of the biggest surprises for new students is the atmosphere/vibe/culture inside Gracie Barra Gloucester. Although everyone trains hard, the culture is built around helping each other improve. Experienced students support beginners.Training partners celebrate each other’s progress. Friendships develop naturally through shared challenges. For many people, the Academy becomes far more than a place to exercise – it has become part an important part of their support network. No bad thing in a time when loneliness is increasingly common, and proof perhaps that belonging to a positive community can have a huge impact on overall wellbeing.
Learning Calm and Control Under Pressure
Life regularly presents situations that test our composure yet Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to stay calm when things don’t go to plan. Whether you’re escaping a difficult position or working through a challenging technique, success comes from controlled breathing, clear thinking and patience – not panic. These lessons often transfer directly into everyday situations, helping students feel more composed at work, at home and during stressful moments.
Better Sleep, More Energy and a Healthier Routine
Regular exercise has long been linked with improved sleep quality, and BJJ is no exception.
Students frequently report:
- Better quality sleep
- Increased daily energy
- Improved mood
- Greater motivation
- Reduced anxiety
Rather than feeling drained, many people discover that training consistently gives them more energy throughout the week.
